Mohs micrographic surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized form of skin cancer surgery. It is considered the most effective procedure for treating many types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The Mohs surgery procedure is performed in stages by a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon under local anesthesia, starting with surgical removal of the skin cancer. This tissue specimen is processed into a slide by a histotechnician, which is then interpreted under the microscope by the Mohs surgeon. If all of the margins are free of cancerous cells, the tumor has been cleared. However, if there is skin cancer remaining, the location of the cancerous cells are carefully mapped and the process is continued layer by layer until all of the skin cancer has been removed.

Patients benefit from Mohs surgery because it allows for the same day removal of the skin cancer with the highest cure rate, while sparing the maximum amount of healthy tissue. This allows the Mohs surgeon to confidently reconstruct the resulting defect with advanced surgical techniques to ensure the best possible cosmetic outcome and scar.

Dr. Husain is an experienced fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon and has performed thousands of Mohs surgery procedures. He is passionate about curing skin cancer and performing reconstruction with the best aesthetic results.

Excisions

An excision is a surgical procedure in which either a benign or malignant skin growth is removed under local anesthesia. After the growth is excised, the dermatologic surgeon typically sutures the wound closed for optimal healing. The excised tissue is sent to the laboratory to be analyzed by an expert dermatopathologist. Atypical moles and skin cancers are frequently excised with margins to ensure complete removal and cure. Benign growths, such as moles, cysts, and lipomas can also be removed as elective cosmetic procedures.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is the use of extremely cold temperatures produced by liquid nitrogen to destroy abnormal skin tissue. We use cryosurgery to treat benign growths such as warts, pre-cancerous growths such as actinic keratoses, and in limited cases even early-stage skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Cryosurgery offers advantages because it’s effective, less invasive than surgery, and quick to perform in the office. However, like any surgical procedure, there can be complications such as pigmentary changes, scarring, and changes in sensation so it is best performed by a highly-skilled and experienced dermatologist.
